Honda announced recently that it’s to stop making the drophead, two-seater S2000. And since this has always been my favourite small sports car, I thought I’d borrow one and go for one last, tearful drive.

God, it was horrible. There wasn’t enough room for even small parts of me to get comfortable. The digital instruments looked like they had come straight from a Nik Kershaw video. The plastics would have looked shoddy on an Ethiopian’s wheelie bin. It was as sparsely equipped as an Amish barn. And the noise. It was hip-hop horrendous. Conversation was impossible. Thought was impossible. It was the kind of relentless drone that, after a while, can drive a man mad.

So how come I used to love this car so much? It’s not like I’m talking here about meeting up with an old girlfriend. The Honda has not become fat and frumpy. It isn’t pushing a pram or wearing tweed instead of miniskirts. It’s not now married to a golfer called Colin. It’s exactly the same now as it was in 2005. And 2005 is not that long ago.

Except of course, in automotive terms, 2005 is somewhere between the big bang and the Norman conquests. And what was acceptable then — heavy steering, no sat nav, religious persecution and dinosaurs — is not acceptable any more.

Cars are not getting faster or more economical. But in terms of refinement and comfort, they are a country mile better than the cars you could buy as recently as a week ago last Tuesday. (Unless you have a Peugeot.)

This is great for us but it’s a big problem for Britain’s small car makers. Because in the olden days (1994), when all cars exploded every few minutes, you could have a Lotus or a TVR or a Morgan and it wasn’t that much different.

Today, though, as the big car companies churn out cars that have no transmission whine and never break down — Peugeot excepted — the offerings from a small car company look as out of date as a ruff. This is because small car companies have no robots. There isn’t the money for relentless testing of every component in every corner of the world. The car must be designed on an Amstrad and put together by a man in a brown store-coat. And saying a car is hand-built is just another way of saying the glove box lid won’t shut properly.

Take the Lotus Elise. It squeaks. It rattles. It drones. It vibrates. It’s hard to get into and impossible to get out of. It’s badly equipped and hard to operate. All of this might have been acceptable 13 years ago when the Elise first came out and it might be acceptable today if it were the last word in zip and vigour.

But it isn’t. Compared with even a Golf, it feels old and slow and understeery. It’s a 20th-century car in a 21st-century world where last Friday is already last year. And the last new car Lotus made, the Europa, was even worse.

That’s why I wasn’t looking forward to driving the new Evora. I knew it would smell of glue, give me cramp and fall to pieces, because Lotus, up there in the turnips, simply doesn’t have the sort of bang on, bang up to date production line that makes modern mass-produced cars such engineering marvels (except Peugeots, obviously).

I was in for a bit of a shock. No. I was in for a lot of a shock. I was in for so much of a shock, in fact, I had to have a little lie down.

First of all, the bad news. Because it was designed on an Amstrad in someone’s mum’s bedroom, there are mistakes. All you can see in the windscreen is a reflection of the dashboard and all you can see on the ancillary dials is a reflection of whatever weather happens to be prevailing at the time.

What’s more, the buttons are all carefully placed to ensure you can neither see nor find them. And even if you do, they have plainly been labelled by someone who was mad, or four.

Then you have the Alpine sat nav cum multimedia interface wotsit in the dash. Why didn’t Lotus develop its own box of tricks instead of fitting one that’s designed for youths in Citroën Saxos? Simple. It didn’t have the resources.

And so, you get a system that speaks. And what it says is: “You are breaking the speed limit”, every time you go near the throttle. This is very annoying, but happily there is a solution. Because it speaks only once, at the moment you stray over the limit, you should accelerate as quickly as possible to beyond the speed limit and then stay there all day.

The other solution is to turn it off. Which is impossible. Because I’m 49. And a man. So I won’t look things up in instruction books. Or listen to my wife, who said she knew how. Because I know best.

As you can see, then, the Evora features many things to cause much wailing and gnashing of teeth. So the car would have to be very good or very cheap to make those problems worth tolerating. And here’s the thing. It’s both. The 3.5-litre Toyota V6 is not the most powerful engine in the world but it’s smooth — and refined — and the power it produces is delightfully seamless. There’s no sudden savagery. No “Oh my God, I’m going to crash now”. It’s brilliant.

So’s the packaging. Normally, a mid-engined four-seater car looks all wrong. The Ferrari Mondial springs to mind here. But the Evora is bang on. It really is a genuine surprise when you’ve studied the nicely proportioned exterior to find there are two seats in the back. And a dribble of legroom, too, provided the driver isn’t too tall.

And speaking of tall, the front is a revelation. I could get in easily. I could get out without crawling. Inside, I didn’t even need to have the seat fully back. Anyone up to 6ft 7in is going to fit in an Evora and that alone makes it special.

Especially when I tell you the boot, which is at the back, where it should be, is big enough for two sets of golf clubs.

So, the driving. Sadly, I didn’t have much chance to really push it — the weather was horrendous and time was tight — but I put in enough miles to know this car has great steering and handles well. Of course it does. It’s a Lotus. And because it’s a Lotus, it’ll crash and jar and lurch from pothole to speed bump.

Wrong. It simply glided over absolutely everything a torrential rainstorm and Britain’s B roads could throw at it. There is no other mid-engined supercar that has ever been so compliant. Or refined. Or quiet. It’s amazing. It doesn’t feel like it was made in a shed in Norfolk. It feels like it was made yesterday, by a machine.

The Evora, then, is not a car you buy because it’s a Lotus and you have always fancied one. It’s a car you buy because you want a comfortable, practical, mid-engined supercar and no one else makes such a thing. Not Ferrari. Not Lamborghini. Not anyone.

As I wafted from corner to corner, gradually forgetting about the smell of the glue they used to hold the chassis together, and the reflections, and the silly sat nav, I started guessing how much this car might cost. I reckoned on somewhere around £60,000. I was wrong. It’s less than 50.

And that’s what makes this the most modern car of them all. It’s the first to come to the market with a deflationary price tag.

A farm worker in Canada has infected a herd of pigs with swine flu, the first documented case of the virus being passed from humans to animals.

The herd of pigs tested positive for the H1N1 virus after the worker returned from Mexico with the disease. The herd has been quarantined.

Brian Evans, a senior official from Canada’s food safety agency, said that up to 200 pigs had been infected at the Alberta Farm, and that both the man and pigs are recovering, adding that the virus did not seem to have spread.

He emphasised that there was no food safety concern related to this finding. "The chance that these pigs could transfer virus to a person is remote," he said.

The case adds to growing international concern about the safety of eating pork products, with Russia, China, Indonesia, Ukraine, Philippines and Serbia introducting partial or total import bans of pork from the US.

The UN and World Trade Organisation said on Saturday that there is no justification for such anti-pork trade measures as a result of the swine flu epidemic.

"To date there is no evidence that the virus is transmitted by food," statement said, adding that consumers can safely eat pig products as long as they are prepared hygienically.

Confirmed cases of the swine flu virus now stand at 787 worldwide, with more than half of those in Mexico. Three new deaths reported on Saturday took their death toll to 19, quashing hope that the epidemic’s toll was levelling off.

The World Health Organisation has declared a phase 5 alert level – one step short of declaring a pandemic.

Fifteen cases have so far been confirmed in the UK, including a six-year-old girl from Oxfordshire, who became the youngest Briton to catch the virus. She has made a full recovery, doctors announced today.

A fourth case was confirmed today in Scotland, and fourteen possible cases are being investigated in Wales.

Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show that measures have so far limited the spread of the disease in Britain, but that the country must prepare for the possibility of a more serious, second wave in the autumn.

“We have to not just deal with this outbreak now, but prepare, perhaps, for a second phase further down the line,” he said.

“There will be more cases...there is absolutely no doubt of that. But at the moment all the evidence is that we can confine it, contain it, and treat it effectively.”

China’s response to the first confirmed case of the virus in Asia has meanwhile sparked a diplomatic row with Mexico.

Hong Kong police have blocked access to as city centre hotel in which 300 people are being quarantined after it emerged that a Mexican man suffering from the flu had spent seven hours there.

Health officials and security officers dressed in plastic overalls and masks are providing supplies to the 200 guests and 100 staff, who are to be confined in the MetroPark hotel for seven days.

Panic and frustration mounts among those confined, while in Beijing, Mexicans have also reportedly been confined to a poorly-equipped hotel in the city.

Patricia Espinosa, the Mexican Foreign Minister, criticised the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities for discriminating against Mexicans who show no signs of carrying the virus.

"We are especially worried about China, where Mexican citizens showing no signs at all of being ill, have been isolated, under unacceptable conditions. These are discriminatory measures, without foundation ... The Foreign Ministry recommends avoiding traveling to China until these measures are corrected."

She also condemned Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Cuba for suspending flights from Mexico due to the flu outbreak.

Mexico traditionally has had good ties with all of those nations. Gavin Smith, a virologist at Hong Kong University, said the quarantine was justified. "With influenza, people are infected before they show symptoms. It seems to me like quite a reasonable measure," he said.

The leading man is one of the Hollywood's most bankable stars. His female counterpart is a mysterious Russian with the voice of an angel and an intriguing link to James Bond. The plot involves a spurned wife, a near billion-dollar fortune, and an increasingly messy divorce.

Mel Gibson's suddenly turbulent private life took another step towards summer blockbuster status last week, when he pitched up at the Los Angeles premiere of the new X-Men movie showing off a glamorous new girlfriend: a singer and former employee called Oksana Grigorieva.

The appearance, just a fortnight after the Oscar-winning actor's wife of 30 years, Robyn, unexpectedly filed for divorce, raised the ante in what – with at least $900m (£600m) at stake – promises to be the most expensive Hollywood split in history.

"Mel has been single for almost three years," was how his spokesman explained the pictures showing Gibson, 53, hand-in-hand on the red carpet with the 39-year-old brunette. "It's nice to see him getting out and enjoying himself."

Maybe so. But few things could have been better designed to rile Robyn Gibson, who separated from her husband in 2006 and filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" after the actor was photographed on a Costa Rican beach embracing Ms Grigorieva.

Gibson seldom attends film industry events. Some wondered if Wednesday's appearance marked the start of a "re-branding" in advance of November's release of Edge of Darkness, his first film since a drink-driving arrest in 2006, when he derailed his career by telling a Jewish police officer: "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

Others speculated that Gibson may be softening up his public for a bombshell announcement. The US TV show Access Hollywood has reported that he's actually been with Ms Grigorieva for three years, and the musician is reported to have informed friends that she is pregnant.

The Russian singer has "form" for stepping-out with action heroes who boast Irish ancestry: her 12-year-old son is the product of a long-term relationship with the former James Bond Timothy Dalton. Ms Grigorieva was brought up in Ukraine and emigrated to the UK at the age of 20 to be a care worker, but subsequently studied at the Royal College of Music and launched a career as a pianist and singer.

Further speculation surrounds what Gibson's church will make of the relationship. The actor is a member of a conservative Catholic sect that does not recognise the authority of the Pope and follows an antiquated ideology dating back to the 16th century.

The divorce's greatest impact on his daily life, however, is likely to be financial. Gibson has built up an enormous fortune, making the bulk of his wealth from The Passion of the Christ, which he produced and bankrolled. Costing $30m, the film was released in 2004 and became a commercial sensation, generating $611m at the box office, along with tens of millions of dollars in DVD sales.

Since almost every penny Gibson owns was generated during his marriage to Robyn, which lasted almost three decades, he is likely under Californian law to have to surrender half of the $900m fortune.

A crumb of comfort may come from the fact that this week's outing is unlikely to have damaged his financial prospects. "In California, there is nothing wrong with dating someone when you are separated," said the LA divorce attorney, Lynn Soodik, this week.

Barclays bank is playing a lead role in the establishment of a tax haven in Ghana, in a move that could see huge mineral wealth in west Africa vanish into it from poverty-stricken countries' coffers, the Observer can reveal.

The controversial British lender has for the last four years worked closely with the Ghanian government to start an International Financial Services Centre offering low taxes and minimal financial disclosure.

Development charities fear that the establishment of a fully operating tax haven so close to oil- and mineral-rich countries such as Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea will encourage a rapid increase in tax and capital flight.

There is also concern that cocaine barons, increasingly using west Africa as a trafficking route into Europe, could launder drug money through Ghana.

The process of establishing a Ghanaian tax haven has been under way since 2005 and Barclays was instrumental from the start when it signed a memorandum of understanding with the country.

Ghanaian banking laws have been reformed to allow Barclays to operate as an offshore bank. So far it is the only bank offering offshore tax services. But others are set to join when later this year a law is expected to be passed in Ghana that will allow for the establishment of trusts and company registration.

Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, said: "Barclays seems to be the market leader in tax avoidance schemes and Ghana is a new name to add to the list. Unfortunately this is a very cynical way of doing business and I trust this will be noted by the government if ever they need to ask for cash."

Wilson Prichard, a member of the governance team at the Sussex University-based Institute of Development Studies, whose report on Ghana's tax and development is due to be published later this month, said: "Oil-producing nations are plagued by corruption and drug trafficking and the creation of this international financial services centre will make this worse - not better."

Barclays stresses that the creation of a tax haven in Ghana will be a source of high quality jobs and will encourage tourism and economic activity. The company said: "We adhere to the highest and most stringent levels of international regulation, rules and industry guidance for the financial services sector."

Barclays has been at the centre of series of high profile tax avoidance controversies in recent weeks. This week, the bank will update the City on its trading performance.

Veronica Lario, the wife of the Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, is to ask for a divorce after a series of public disputes with her husband over the close attention he pays to younger women.

Italian media reported that Lario, 52, had contacted a lawyer to start divorce proceedings against Berlusconi, 72, whom she married in 1990.

Last week, Lario fired off an angry letter to a local news agency, Ansa, describing as "shameless rubbish" Berlusconi's reported plan to select a series of young women, including a Big Brother contestant, as candidates for the European parliament.

She also criticised her husband's decision to spend a night at a Naples disco celebrating the birthday of an 18-year-old, Noemi Letizia.

A source close to Lario confirmed the contents of a report in today's La Repubblica, which quoted Lario as stating: "I cannot stay with a man who frequents minors."

Berlusconi publicly asked Lario for forgiveness in 2007 after she wrote to an Italian newspaper complaining about his flirting with a TV showgirl at an awards ceremony. After last week's outburst, Berlusconi did not back down, claiming Lario had been swayed by misleading press reports.

Lario, a former actor whose real name is Miriam Raffaella Bartolini, was courted by Berlusconi after he saw her appear topless in a Milan theatre production in 1980. At the time, Berlusconi was married to his first wife, with whom he had two children. Lario and Berlusconi have three children.

La Repubblica reported that Lario had discussed her decision to divorce with her children. "I am convinced that at this point it would be more dignified to stop here," the newspaper quoted her saying.

Niccolò Ghedini, a lawyer for Berlusconi, said today the prime minister was not making a statement. "All affairs of this kind are personal and painful," he told Corriere della Sera.

The World Health Organisation said today it had now confirmed nearly 800 cases of H1N1 swine flu in 17 countries as scientists waited to see whether the disease would develop into a full blown pandemic.

Ireland was added to the 787 confirmed cases in 17 countries listed by the WHO, and a fourth case was confirmed in Scotland by UK officials, taking the British toll to 16.

The Scottish health secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, said the latest case, a man who had recently returned from the US, had no connection to the honeymoon couple who were the first to be confirmed with the virus in Britain.

New cases were was also confirmed in Italy and Colombia, but are yet to be included by the WHO.

The WHO said 506 people have been infected in Mexico resulting in 19 confirmed deaths.

Mexican officials, who put the suspected death toll at more than 100, said cases of serious fever appeared to be easing.

"Each day there are fewer serious cases and the mortality has been decreasing," the health minister, José Angel Córdova, told a news conference in Mexico City, where millions were heeding government advice to stay at home.

The Mexican government also complained to Chinese counterparts over reports that more than 50 of its citizens were being detained in hotels and elsewhere despite only one showing mild flu symptoms.

The Mexican foreign minister, Patricia Espinosa, described their quarantine as "unacceptable".

A spokesman for the city government in Shanghai – where 35 are detained - claimed the steps were justified under WHO guidelines and were within the law.

Alan Johnson, the health secretary, said swine flu had so far been contained in Britain but warned against complacency.

"Our evidence from all previous pandemics is that you get two phases. You get a first wave that is often very mild and then you get a much more serious wave that comes along in the autumn and the winter," he told BBC1's The Andrew Marr Show.

"So we have to not just deal with this outbreak now, but prepare, perhaps, for a second phase further down the line."

Although the WHO has declared a phase 5 alert level – one step short of declaring a pandemic – Johnson said that the measures taken in the UK had proved effective in limiting the spread of the disease.

"There will be more cases. There are 15 confirmed at the moment, that will go up, there is absolutely no doubt of that. But at the moment all the evidence is that we can confine it, contain it, and treat it effectively."

Britain's youngest case, a six-year-old girl from Oxfordshire, has made a full recovery, doctors announced.

The girl, who recently visited Mexico, had shaken off the disease after a course of antiviral medicine.

A spokesman for NHS Oxfordshire said: "We can confirm that the six-year-old girl from Oxfordshire who tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) virus has made a full recovery."

The Scottish government defended its decision not to tell concert-goers that Britain's first swine flu victim was in the audience days before being diagnosed.

Iain Askham, 27, went to see rock band Doves at an Edinburgh venue on 23 April after returning from his honeymoon in Cancún, Mexico.

"I told them everything when I was in hospital," he told the People. "They suggested it was best not to mention it to anyone else so as not to cause any panic."

A Scottish government spokesperson said: "We are aware that Mr Askham did attend a concert on 23 April – before he was being treated – but this would not be classed as close contact.

"The risk of spread to others who were around him is low, and it is important to stress that the risk to public health in Scotland remains low."

NHS Direct released figures of the number of swine flu related calls it received last week, peaking at 3,630 on Thursday, a day after the WHO raised the threat level to five. The swine flu information line received 3,300 calls on Thursday, the day it launched, and 10,400 on Friday, NHS Direct added.

Authorities in Canada reported the first case of the disease being passed from humans to pigs. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency stressed the incident posed no threat to the food supply.

"A Canadian carpenter who had been in Mexico, upon return, was exhibiting flu-like symptoms, did work on the Alberta farm, and subsequently the family and swine on the farm became ill," the US department of agriculture said in a statement.

The agency said the infected herd was quarantined pending more testing "but that the chances the pigs could transfer the virus to humans was remote".

The WHO director of global alert and response, Michael Ryan, said he still expected to see sustained transmission of the disease in a number of countries.

"I would still propose that a pandemic is imminent because we are seeing the disease spread," he told a press briefing.

Des affrontements ont opposé, dimanche 3 mai au Caire, des éleveurs de porcs à des policiers venus prendre leurs animaux pour les faire abattre. Cette élimination du cheptel porcin, très controversée, a été décidée par les autorités égyptiennes pour lutter contre la propagation du virus de la grippe porcine.

Trois à quatre cents résidents de Manchiyet Nasr, un quartier de la colline du Moqattam habité majoritairement par des chiffonniers chrétiens coptes, ont accueilli par des jets de pierres et de bouteilles des policiers dépêchés sur les lieux à la mi-journée. Quelques centaines de policiers des forces anti-émeutes ont alors répliqué en lançant des gaz lacrymogènes et tirant des balles en caoutchouc contre les manifestants, pour la plupart des jeunes gens.

La police a fini par pénétrer en début d'après-midi dans le quartier, où résident environ 35 000 chiffonniers ou "zabbaline", une communauté qui trie sur place les ordures et élève quelque 60 000 porcs.

Des incidents ont aussi éclaté de nouveau entre éleveurs de porcs et policiers à Khanka, dans le gouvernorat de Qalioubiya, à 25 km au nord du Caire. Des policiers avaient du rebrousser chemin devant cette localité après avoir reçu des jets de pierre mercredi, au premier jour de l'annonce de la décision du gouvernement.

Des critiques ont fusé contre une telle mesure dans un pays où aucun cas animal ou humain n'a pour l'instant été déclaré, d'autant plus que l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) a indiqué n'avoir connaissance d'"aucune personne contaminée par des porcs". Les autorités égyptiennes avaient d'abord présenté la mesure d'abattage comme une précaution face à la grippe porcine, avant d'affirmer qu'il s'agissait d'éradiquer des élevages insalubres. La majorité des 80 millions d'Egyptiens sont des musulmans, dont la religion interdit de manger du porc considéré comme "impur". Les chrétiens coptes, qui, eux, élèvent et consomment du porc, constituent de 6 à 10 % de la population. Selon un éleveur de porc, les autorités "veulent se débarrasser des cochons parce que cet animal est interdit par l'Islam et qu'ils disent que l'Egypte est un pays islamique".

Après avoir affirmé que l'abattage des porcs allait se faire immédiatement, les autorités ont admis qu'il faudrait environ six mois aux abattoirs pour venir à bout de tout le cheptel porcin – quelque 250 000 bêtes. Le ministre de l'agriculture, Amine Abaza, a annoncé que Le Caire devrait importer trois nouvelles machines spéciales pour parvenir à une capacité d'abattage de 3 000 porcs par jour. Selon le quotidien gouvernemental Al-Ahram, le barème de dédommagements prévoit 100 livres (14 euros) de compensation pour chaque porc abattu, 250 pour une femelle (35 euros).

Par ailleurs, 83 patients sont «en observation» dans l'attente des résultats des examens devant déterminer s'ils ont été contaminés ou pas par le virus.

15H00: En France, les spécialistes se montrent rassurants: le virus reste pour l'heure un phénomène bénin qui pourrait s'amplifier en revanche à l'automne prochain. Roselyne Bachelot le répète, «le mot d'ordre, c'est sérénité et vigilance».

En ce moment le Samu reçoit «30 à 50 appels par jour» concernant le nouveau virus, mais «un petit nombre seulement» sont considérés à risque: «le gros de notre travail c'est de rassurer», a expliqué le professeur Pierre Carli, chef des Samu de Paris.

Le gouvernement va lancer mardi une campagne d'information pour rappeler les bons gestes: «se laver les mains plusieurs fois par jour, tousser et éternuer dans un mouchoir en papier qu'on jette... et on ne va pas chez son médecin dans une salle d'attente, ni aux urgences: on appelle le 15!», a rappelé Roselyne Bachelot.

14H12: En Egypte, de violents affrontements ont éclaté au Caire entre éleveurs de porcs et des policiers venus prendre leurs animaux pour les faire abattre. Au nom du principe de précaution, le gouvernement a ordonné mercredi l'abattage de quelque 250.000 cochons élevés dans le pays, alors qu'aucun cas de cette grippe ne s'est déclaré en Egypte. A noter: les données de l'OMS sont souvent inférieures aux bilans communiqués par les pays concernés en raison des procédures de vérification effectuées par l'organisation après leurs annonces.

13H16: Le dernier bilan épidémiologique du ministère français de la Santé fait état de 8 cas «probables» de grippe, tous importés du Mexique, sauf un de retour de Californie. Cinq de ces malades potentiels se trouvent en Ile-de-France, 1 en Aquitaine, 1 en Auvergne et 1 en PACA. Aucun ne présente de «forme grave».

13H08: Selon la presse colombienne, les autorités du pays s'apprête à annoncer le premier cas de grippe A dans le pays. Si l'information est confirmée, la Colombie serait le 19 ème Etat touché par le virus.

11H30: En Italie, un deuxième cas confirmé a été enregistré à Rome. Le jeune homme, âgé de 25 ans, revient d'un voyage au Mexique. Il a été suivi dès son retour et serait déjà guéri.

11H00: 300 personnes en quarantaine dans un palace de Hong Kong. Les clients et membres du personnel de ce luxueux hôtel Metropark ont interdiction de sortir depuis vendredi. Motif: un Mexicain de 25 ans atteint de la grippe A a séjourné quelques heures dans cet hôtel. Palace ou pas, ils commencent à trouver le temps long. «A part un Japonais qui s'est un peu emporté samedi matin, je n'ai pas ressenti d'atmosphère de psychose dans l'hôtel. Il s'agit plutôt d'un fatalisme résigné», raconte un des touristes bloqués.

10H21: On l'apprend ce matin. Hier après-midi, des bagagistes de l'aéroport d'Orly ont refusé de décharger des avions arrivant du Mexique et d'Espagne par crainte du virus. Résultat: des retards pour plus de 1.000 passagers.

10H08: Les médecins généralistes sur le pont. Une réunion d'information des représentants des médecins libéraux sera organisée mardi matin au ministère de la Santé. De son côté, le syndicat de médecins MG France annonce la mise en place d'un système de veille et une cellule d'accompagnement des médecins.

Hier, le syndicat Union généraliste regrettait dans une lettre ouverte à Roselyne Bachelot leur manque d'informations, alors qu'ils sont en première ligne au contact des patients.

7H00: Aux Etats-Unis, le virus A (H1N1) a infecté probablement plus de 1.000 personnes à New York - dont 63 cas confirmés par des tests en laboratoire. Toutes ces personnes ont été soignées ou sont en voie de guérison, selon les autorités sanitaires de la ville.

6H28: En quarantaine. Quelque 41 Mexicains ont été placés à l'isolement en Chine, après la découverte du virus chez un Mexicain de 25 ans arrivé à Hong Kong via Shanghai.

Réaction immédiate du Mexique: les autorités recommandent à ses ressortissants «de ne pas voyager en Chine» en représailles aux mesures prises par Pékin à leur encontre.

4H04: Dernier bilan. La grippe porcine a été détectée officiellement dans 18 pays. L'épidémie a fait officiellement 20 morts, 19 au Mexique et un aux Etats-Unis, qui comptabilisaient en outre samedi 159 malades.

En France, on compte 2 cas «confirmés», 7 «probables» et 22 «possibles». Au Mexique, le nombre de morts a été revu à la hausse hausse avec 19 morts, soit trois de plus, et 454 malades. Dans le même temps, le ministre assure que la grippe semble en «phase de stabilisation» au Mexique. Moins rassurante, l'OMS indique ne pas connaître le degré de gravité de la pandémie.

1H16: La Française Florence Cassez, condamnée à 60 ans de prison au Mexique pour participation à des enlèvements, «supplie» Nicolas Sarkozy de la «rapatrier» en raison des risques accrus de contagion par la grippe en milieu carcéral. «Depuis le développement de l'épidémie de la grippe porcine on ne nous donne pas de masque, on nous dit qu'il n'y en a plus», écrit la jeune femme de 34 ans depuis sa prison de Mexico.

00H23: Un premier cas de transmission de l'homme au porc a été relevé. Les autorités canadiennes annonce que des porcs ont été infectés par le virus H1N1, probablement par un agriculteur s'étant rendu au Mexique. Selon le Dr Brian Evans de l'ACIA, il est «fort probable» que les porcs aient été exposés au virus par un agriculteur s'étant rendu récemment au Mexique.

Peu avant minuit: Quatre organisations internationales, dont l'OMS, dénoncent dans un communiqué conjoint les mesures de boycott de la viande de porc prises par une quinzaine de pays, dont la Chine et la Russie.

A l'occasion de la journée internationale de la liberté de la presse, Reporter sans Frontières se mobilise pour cette journaliste américano-iranienne, condamnée à huit ans de prison pour espionnage.

L'organisation Reporters sans frontières (RSF) «se mobilise», à l'occasion de la Journée internationale de la liberté de la presse, dimanche, pour la libération de trois journalistes femmes, dont l'Irano-américaine Roxana Saberi.

RSF a appelé à «un grand rassemblement» dimanche à 15 heures devant l'ambassade d'Iran à Paris «afin de remettre aux autorités iraniennes une pétition demandant la libération de Roxana Saberi».

Interpellée fin janvier à Téhéran où elle résidait depuis 2003, Roxana Saberi a été condamnée à huit ans de prison pour espionnage au profit des Etats-Unis à l'issue d'un procès à huis clos le 13 avril. Détenue dans la prison d'Evine, au nord de la capitale iranienne, elle a entamé une grève de la faim le 21 avril.

Quatre membres de RSF sont en grève de la faim depuis le 28 avril en soutien à la journaliste irano-américaine, indique l'organisation, précisant que «des actions similaires» vont se mettre en place à partir de dimanche au Canada, aux Etats-Unis, au Royaume-Uni, en Belgique et en Espagne.

«Il est également urgent que les deux journalistes américaines de la chaîne Current TV, Euna Lee et Laura Ling, détenues à Pyongyang depuis le 17 mars 2009, soient libérées», déclare RSF.

«Roxana Saberi, Euna Lee et Laura Ling sont des journalistes professionnelles qui ne sont ni des espionnes, ni des criminelles. A travers elles, l'Iran et la Corée du Nord prennent en otages la liberté de la presse et celle d'informer», dénonce l'organisation.

En France, outre les deux cas avérés hospitalisés, vingt-deux autres cas «possibles» sont toujours en cours d'évaluation. Le Mexique se dit optimiste, et constate une «diminution des cas graves».

En France, vingt-deux cas «possibles» de grippe porcine étaient en cours d'évaluation dimanche. Huit cas «probables» de grippe, tous importés du Mexique, sauf un de retour de Californie, sont déclarés «probables». Sur les 6 cas «probables», 4 sont «plus probables», les tests ayant montré qu'ils étaient porteurs du virus A de la grippe tout en n'étant pas porteurs de la grippe saisonnière.

Sur les sept cas «probables», six ont été enregistrés en Ile-de-France et le dernier en Aquitaine. «Tous ces patients sont traités, tous ces patients vont aussi bien que possible», a indiqué Jean-Yves Fagon, directeur de la politique médicale à l'AP-HP.L'homme de 37 ans déclaré cas «probable» et hospitalisé à Necker est «par ailleurs considéré comme guéri aujourd'hui et le Pr Lortholary a décidé qu'il quittait l'hôpital ce soir pour rentrer chez lui», a précisé Jean-Yves Fagon.L'hôpital Necker est en outre en attente dans l'après-midi d'un enfant venant du Mexique «et sur lequel tout le bilan doit être fait», a-t-il affirmé.

Par ailleurs, l'Institut Pasteur a fait savoir qu'il devrait disposer dès lundi d'un nouveau test de diagnostic ciblant spécifiquement le nouveau virus de la grippe A (H1N1). «Pour l'instant, nous avons une version intermédiaire, nous devrions avoir une version pleinement opérationnelle dès lundi», a annoncé samedi la virologue Sylvie van der Werf. Basé sur la technique d'amplification génique appelée PCR, ce test devrait permettre de rendre un résultat fiable en une demi-journée.

Une cellule d'aide pour les médecins

La cellule d'accueil médico-psychologique pour les voyageurs en provenance du Mexique a été activée samedi à l'aéroport Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle. Au moment de récupérer leurs bagages, les passagers des vols en provenance de Mexico peuvent donc désormais, s'ils le désirent, obtenir des informations sur la grippe A.

La ministre de l'Intérieur Michèle Alliot-Marie, a indiqué samedi à l'issue d'une réunion de la cellule interministérielle de crise sur la grippe porcine (A-H1N1) que «le ministère de l'Education va déconseiller les voyages scolaires au Mexique ou passant par New York».

Par ailleurs, le syndicat de médecins MG France a annoncé dimanche qu'il mettait en place un système de veille et une cellule d'accompagnement des professionnels, en particulier les médecins généralistes, face au risque pandémique du virus de la grippe A (H1N1). Une réunion d'information des représentants des médecins libéraux sera organisée mardi matin au ministère de la Santé, suite à la lettre ouerte de médecins à l'attention de Roselyne Bachelot.

Une transmission de l'homme au porc a été constatée pour la première fois dans le monde au Canada. L'individu serait guéri et les quelques 200 porcs contaminés, sur un cheptel de 2.200 bêtes (10%), sont également guéris ou en voie de guérison, selon l'ACIA. Mais le troupeau de porcs infectés a été placé en quarantaine. Toutefois, «les chances que ces porcs transmettent le virus à une personne sont minimes». L'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) a indiqué qu'aucune preuve ne permettait de croire que les porcs transmettaient le virus aux humains ou que la consommation de viande de porc comportait un risque.

Le Mexique est optimiste

L'OMS a confirmé dimanche 787 cas de grippe A dans le monde, dont 20 mortels, comprenant notamment 160 cas aux Etats-Unis dont un mort, et 506 cas au Mexique, dont 19 mortels. L'Organisation mondiale de la Santé a affirmé ne pas connaître le degré de gravité de la pandémie, estimant que l'évolution de la situation des «prochains jours en Europe» sera déterminante.

Selon les chiffres du ministère de la Santé mexicain, le Mexique, foyer d'origine du virus mutant H1N1, compte à lui seul 454 cas confirmés, dont 19 mortels. Le gouvernement de Felipe Calderon, accusé de n'avoir pas su réagir à temps face à l'épidémie , et qui peine à contenir l'épidémie, invite désormais les Mexicains à rester chez eux jusqu'au 5 mai.

Pour autant, le ministre mexicain de la Santé, José Angel Cordova, s'est voulu rassurant samedi. «Je crois que nous avons des éléments pour signaler que nous sommes dans une phase de stabilisation», a-t-il déclaré. «Chaque jour nous observons une diminution des cas graves et de fait, la mortalité a diminué». Autre motif d'espoir, le dernier décès remonte au 28 avril.

- Les Etats-Unis comptabilisent samedi 160 personnes de 21 Etats différents ayant contracté le virus A (H1N1), contre 141 la veille. Le pays a enregistré lundi un premier décès sur son sol : un enfant mexicain atteint qui était venu se faire soigné au Texas.

Dans son allocution hebdomadaire, Barack Obama a expliqué samedi qu'il préférait prendre trop de précautions plutôt que pas assez dans son pays. «Je préfère agir maintenant, plutôt qu'hésiter et devoir faire face plus tard à des conséquences plus graves», a-t-il déclaré.

En Colombie, le virus de la grippe a été découvert dimanche chez un homme de 42 ans habitant non loin de la capitale Bogota. Jusque-là, les autorités sanitaires avaient uniquement rapporté des cas «suspects», 29 au dernier bilan, faisant l'objet d'une surveillance particulière. Par ailleurs, 70 cas avérés ont déjà été enregistrés au Canada. Le Costa-Rica, avec un premier cas avéré, est le premier pays d'Amérique centrale à être touché. Au Pérou, un premier cas décelé a finalement été infirmé, et neuf autres cas sont suspects. Le Chili a placé 16 personnes sous surveillance. Au Brésil, 20 personnes sont en observation.

En Océanie, la Nouvelle-Zélande a recensé 4 cas confirmés et 13 «probables», pour un total de 136 cas suspects. Les autorités australiennes, qui enquêtent sur 114 cas, recherchent 22 de leurs ressortissants ayant emprunté le même vol que les Néo-Zélandais contaminés.

Un 1er cas avéré en Irlande

- En Europe, le premier cas de grippe porcine confirmé a été enregistré samedi en Toscane, dans le centre de l'Italie. Le patient en question est un homme qui a été hospitalisé le 30 avril. Il est actuellement guéri, il ne présente désormais plus aucun symptôme, a confirmé samedi le ministre italien de la Santé, Maurizio Sacconi.

Un premier cas avait été confirmé vendredi au Danemark. Il s'agit d'une Danoise rentrée mercredi de New York. L'Allemagne compte également 6 cas avérés. Parmi eux, un cas de grippe porcine chez une infirmière qui ne s'est pas rendue au Mexique a été confirmé en vendredi, mais elle a entretemps guéri. Deux cas suspects mais non confirmés sont toujours en cours d'analyse.

Le premier cas confirmé de grippe A contracté au Royaume-Uni et non lors d'un voyage au Mexique, a été annoncé vendredi par le gouvernement écossais. Au total, 15 cas avérés y ont été recensés. L'Irlande a enregistré son premier cas, samedi.

L'Espagne compte désormais 13 cas confirmés, selon l'OMS, 20 cas selon le ministère espagnol de la Santé, dont un malade contaminé alors qu'il n'avait pas voyagé au Mexique, ainsi que 99 cas suspects. Un premier cas humain a été confirmé en Suisse, 26 cas sont suspects au total dans huit cantons. L'Autriche et les Pays-Bas ont également confirmé un cas chacun.

Des patients sont en observation en Suède, en Grèce, en République Tchèque, en Allemagne, en Italie, en Irlande, en France, en Suisse, en Belgique. Tous les cas suspects en Pologne de personnes potentiellement contaminées par la grippe porcine se sont jusqu'à présent révélés négatifs,selon le laboratoire de l'Inspection sanitaire polonaise, samedi.

- Au Proche-Orient, Israëla annoncé une troisième cas de grippe samedi et deux suspects à Jérusalem.

- Le continent africain est par ailleurs à son tour touché avec deux cas suspects en Afrique du Sud, chez des personnes de retour du Mexique.

- En Asie, un cas a été officiellement confirmé vendredi à Hong-Kong, sur les quatre suspectés. On compte un cas avéré, une religieuse de retour du Mexique , en Corée du Sud. La Chine a pris samedi des mesures de quarantaine et de restriction des transports aériens pour contenir l'épidémie de grippe A. Quelque 41 Mexicains ont été placés à l'isolement.

Les autorités françaises étudient la possibilité de faire interdire les listes de l'humoriste, jugées «antisémites», a annoncé dimanche Claude Guéant.

«Un programme ouvertement antisémite». Claude Guéant, secrétaire général de la présidence, a dénoncé dimanche sur radio J les listes présentées aux Européennes par l'humoriste controversé Dieudonné. Les autorités françaises étudient donc la possibilité de faire interdire ces listes «anti-sionistes» de l'humoriste.

«Les pouvoirs publics sont en train de voir si ces initiatives tombent sous le coup de la loi. Je ne suis pas sûr que nous parvenions à les interdire, nous ne pouvons interdire que ce que le droit permet d'interdire», a expliqué le bras droit de Nicolas Sarkozy. «Dieudonné est antisémite tout le temps, c'est absolument odieux», a -t-il ajouté.

Dieudonné avait annoncé fin avril son intention de présenter au moins cinq listes «anti-sionistes» aux européennes, avec notamment l'ancien membre du Front national Alain Soral. Condamné à plusieurs reprises pour des propos sur la Shoah et les juifs, Dieudonné avait provoqué un tollé en décembre en remettant sur scène, lors d'un spectacle à Paris, un «prix de l'infréquentabilité» au négationniste Robert Faurisson. Il a été renvoyé pour ce fait devant le tribunal correctionnel de Paris pour «injures raciales». Le procès est prévu le 5 mai, mais l'audience sera très probablement renvoyée.

Né en 1966 en banlieue parisienne, d'une mère française et d'un père camerounais, de son vrai nom Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala, il formait à ses débuts un duo avec un autre humoriste, juif, Elie Semoun, dont il s'est depuis séparé. Il s'est rapproché ces dernières années du parti d'extrême droite Front National dont plusieurs membres, notamment son président Jean-Marie Le Pen, avaient assisté à son spectacle en décembre. Jean-Marie Le Pen est le parrain d'une fille de l'humoriste.

«Ora basta, chiudo il sipario: divorzio da mio marito». La svolta di Veronica irrompe nel dibattito politico, ma lo strappo finale in casa Berlusconi è solo l'epilogo di quello che in verità era già nell’aria dopo lo sfogo del 28 aprile scorso all’Ansa, con l’atto di accusa di Veronica Lario sulle veline candidate per le europee e il «ciarpame senza pudore».

La notizia dell’avvio della pratica di divorzio, pubblicata questa mattina da La Stampa e confermata poco dopo dalla stessa Lario all’Ansa, ha avuto un effetto deflagrante. I cronisti si sono precipitati in via del Plebiscito per intercettare il premier che poi ha lasciato la Capitale per volare a Milano. Berlusconi non ha parlato con i cronisti. Più tardi, in una breve nota, ha definito la situazione «una vicenda personale che mi addolora, che rientra nella dimensione privata e di cui mi pare doveroso non parlare».

Nel frattempo, di certo, Berlusconi è rimasto a consulto con i sottosegretari Gianni Letta e Paolo Bonaiuti, per decidere come fronteggiare la questione. Poi poco dopo le 11 l’auto del premier (all’interno anche il fratello Paolo Berlusconi) è uscita da palazzo Grazioli. I cronisti si sono avvicinati, ma Berlusconi ha fatto solo un cenno di saluto con la mano senza fermarsi per parlare con loro. Quindi è partito alla volta di Milano. Dove, peraltro si trova anche la moglie che, come è noto vive a Macherio (mentre Berlusconi ha la sua dimora alla villa di Arcore). Ora si attendono gli sviluppi di questa vicenda privata che, inevitabilmente investe anche la sfera pubblica, e politica.

Sono infatti pesanti le affermazioni di Veronica Lario che, dopo la vicenda della partecipazione del marito al compleanno della diciottenne Noemi a Casoria, vicino Napoli, esce allo scoperto criticando, tra l’altro, le giovanissime frequentazioni attribuite a Berlusconi. Dice anche di aver tentato di «aiutare» suo marito e di aver «implorato coloro che gli stanno accanto di fare altrettanto, come si farebbe con una persona che non sta bene. È stato inutile». Da qui la decisione che non contempla ripensamenti: «Dopo 30 anni chiudo il sipario sulla mia vita coniugale, ma voglio farlo da persona comune e perbene, senza clamore. Vorrei evitare lo scontro».

MILANO - "Chiudo il sipario sulla mia vita coniugale". Dopo quasi trent'anni, i due si conobbero nel 1980 e si sposarono con rito civile il 15 dicembre 1990, le strade del presidente del Consiglio e di sua moglie, già spezzate sul piano sentimentale e personale, si dividono anche giuridicamente.

Veronica Lario ha avviato le pratiche per la separazione e il divorzio da Silvio Berlusconi, portando a termine un percorso cominciato molto tempo fa come ammise lei stessa alla fine dell'estate 2008, quando confessò che all'eventualità di una separazione stava meditando da dieci anni.

Ora ha scelto l'avvocato che la seguirà passo dopo passo davanti ai giudici: "Finalmente una persona di cui mi posso fidare fino in fondo". È una donna. Una professionista lontana dallo star system e dalla politica. L'ha sentita al telefono il primo maggio, l'avvocato era in vacanza su un'isola del Sud Italia. È stato in pratica il loro primo vertice sulla separazione. Veronica le ha spiegato: "Voglio tirare giù il sipario, ma voglio fare una cosa da persona comune e perbene, senza clamore. Nella risposta non ci sono state esitazioni: "So tutto. Voglio andare avanti". Ieri le due donne si sono incontrate a Macherio per studiare la strategia e si rivedranno molto presto, all'inizio della settimana. Vogliono stringere i tempi, evitare il contropiede di un uomo sempre molto abile a ribaltare le situazioni, capace di convocare una conferenza stampa per dire che il divorzio lo ha deciso lui per primo, e non la "signora".

Naturalmente nei giorni scorsi Veronica ne ha discusso con i figli e le persone più vicine, un paio di amiche molto care, sottolineando ancora una volta le ragioni del suo distacco dalla vita pubblica del marito e insistendo sull'importanza che rappresenta per una donna come lei il valore della dignità: "Ora sono più tranquilla - ha confidato loro - . Sono convinta che a questo punto non sia dignitoso che io mi fermi qui. La strada del mio matrimonio è segnata, non posso stare con un uomo che frequenta le minorenni".

Per i suoi ragazzi - Barbara di 24 anni, Eleonora di 22 che studia negli Stati Uniti e Luigi di 20, il più legato al mito imprenditoriale e politico del papà - sono state ore di grande amarezza e di sofferenza, ma alla madre tutti e tre hanno assicurato che rispetteranno ogni sua decisione per dolorosa possa essere: "Non muoveremo mai un dito contro nostro padre, ma tu mamma fai ciò che ti fa stare bene".

L'inizio della fine arriva la mattina di martedì 28 aprile. Veronica guarda i giornali, la sua attenzione si sofferma sull'articolo di "Repubblica" che svela come nella notte di domenica il premier si sia presentato a sorpresa in una villetta di Casoria, dove si celebravano i diciott'anni di Noemi Letizia. Lei è bella, bionda, studia da grafica pubblicitaria a Portici e sogna una carriera televisiva, tanto che avrebbe inviato il suo "book" fotografico al presidente del Consiglio in persona. Un album che avrebbe provocato la scintilla. Accanto a Noemi ci sono il padre Elio e la madre Anna. La ragazza chiama Berlusconi "papi", ai giornalisti dirà più tardi che lo conosce da tempo e che spesso lo va a trovare a Milano e Roma, "perché lui, poverino, lavora molto e non può sempre venire a Napoli". Il Cavaliere le ha portato un regalo, una collana d'oro giallo e bianco con pendente di brillanti. C'è chi mormora anche le chiavi di un'auto, ma Noemi smentisce.

Veronica legge e rimane stupefatta, chiama al telefono un'amica: "Basta, non posso più andare a braccetto con questo spettacolo". A Roma infuria la polemica sulle "veline" pronte a entrare nelle liste elettorali del Pdl e ci sono, soprattutto, quella ragazzina di Casoria, Noemi, e la sua mamma Anna che si rivolgono a Berlusconi con gli affettuosi diminutivi di "papi" e "papino". Veronica non ce l'ha né con le giovani donne aspiranti europarlamentari né con Noemi. Interpreta la loro parabola quasi epicamente, come "figure di vergini che si offrono al drago per rincorrere il successo, la notorietà e la crescita economica". La sconcerta, però, che il metodo da "ciarpame politico" non faccia scandalo, che quasi nessuno si stupisca, che "per una strana alchimia il paese tutto conceda e tutto giustifichi al suo imperatore", come racconta a chi le sta vicino.

Quell'imperatore è ancora suo marito ed è il padre dei suoi figli, un padre che, seppure invitato, non ha mai partecipato alla festa dei loro diciott'anni. Di fronte alla nuova pubblica offesa sceglie di replicare pubblicamente con una dichiarazione che manda all'agenzia Ansa soltanto dopo le dieci di sera. È stato infatti un giorno di angoscia a villa Belvedere. Barbara, incinta di sette mesi del suo secondo figlio, è stata ricoverata all'ospedale San Raffaele. Sono lunghe ore di ansia, c'è il rischio di un parto prematuro. Veronica Lario ha in casa il nipotino Alessandro, chiede alla segretaria Paola di fermarsi fino a mezzanotte. La misura è colma, il "ciarpame" non è soltanto politico.
La mattina successiva Berlusconi dalla Polonia attiva la cortina fumogena e la contraerea dopo una notte di rabbia. Ordina che le "veline" spariscano quasi tutte dalle liste europee, ridimensiona il rapporto con Noemi a una antica conoscenza con il padre ex autista di Craxi (notizia poi smentita da Bobo Craxi e cancellata comicamente addirittura da un comunicato di Palazzo Chigi) e liquida con una battuta maschilista e greve l'indignazione della moglie, evitando di pronunciarne il nome e il ruolo: "La signora si è fatta ingannare dai giornali della sinistra. Mi spiace". Rientrato a Roma, annulla un incontro in calendario per il giorno successivo con il presidente della Camera Gianfranco Fini.

La sua intenzione è di andare a Milano, come fece due anni or sono, per ricucire lo strappo con Veronica. Non ci andrà, lo ferma la sua fidatissima segretaria Marinella. Veronica Lario, infatti, l'ha appena chiamata: riferisca a mio marito che non mi si avvicini, non ho più nulla da dire e nulla da ascoltare, tutte le parole sono state consumate.

Giovedì i giornali del Cavaliere e i blog del Pdl fanno capire all'ex first lady di Macherio che aria tira. Dietro al "come si permette?" si scatena una minacciosa muta di cani. Il quotidiano "Libero" pubblica nella testata di prima pagina tre fotografie in bianconero della giovane attrice Veronica Lario a seno nudo. Il messaggio è più che mai trasparente, sembra arrivata l'ora dell'olio di ricino. Quando vede quelle fotografie la moglie del premier capisce, se ce ne fosse ancora bisogno, di essere davvero sola e di essere minacciata. In quelle foto si sente "come davanti a un plotone di esecuzione qualche secondo prima della fucilazione". Alla figlia Barbara dice: "Sono molto preoccupata di ciò che potrà accadere, ma ho la libertà per andare avanti".
Cala il sipario. La lettera affidata a "Repubblica" due anni fa da Veronica era un ultimatum. Qualche ora dopo Berlusconi inviò le sue scuse pubbliche alla moglie. Era il 31 gennaio 2007: "La tua dignità non c'entra, la custodisco come un bene prezioso nel mio cuore anche quando dalla mia bocca esce la battuta spensierata, il riferimento galante, la bagattella di un momento". A sigillo un grande bacio. Qualche mese dopo, ad appannaggio esclusivo dei settimanali patinati della famiglia, arrivarono le passeggiate della coppia mano nella mano nel giardino della villa in Costa Smeralda e sui moli di Portofino.

Immagini che oggi sembrano lontanissime. "Mi domando in che paese viviamo - ha raccontato Veronica l'altro giorno a un'amica - , come sia possibile accettare un metodo politico come quello che si è cercato di utilizzare per la composizione delle liste elettorali del centrodestra e come bastino due mie dichiarazioni a generare un immediato dietrofront. Io ho fatto del mio meglio, tutto ciò che ho creduto possibile. Ho cercato di aiutare mio marito, ho implorato coloro che gli stanno accanto di fare altrettanto, come si farebbe con una persona che non sta bene. È stato tutto inutile. Credevo avessero capito, mi sono sbagliata. Adesso dico basta".

Il ministro: l'episodio non desta preoccupazione
In Egitto scontri tra allevatori di suini e polizia

ROMA (3 maggio) - C'è un secondo caso di influenza A in Italia, dopo quello segnalato a Massa. Si tratta di un ragazzo di 25 anni, tornato dal Messico e già guarito. Il giovane è stato curato dall'Istituto Spallanzani ma non è mai stato sottoposto a ricovero. La sua compagna è stata trattata in via precauzionale con antivirali. A Massa ieri il primo caso italiano. L'uomo, un cinquantenne della provincia di Massa, era rientrato da un viaggio in Messico il 23 aprile scorso. Era ricoverato da alcuni giorni nel reparto di malattie infettive dell'ospedale locale. Secondo quanto spiegano fonti sanitarie, l'uomo «è guarito, non rischia più niente».

Ministero: il caso a Roma non desta preoccupazione. Il ministero della Salute ha confermato il secondo caso del virus. Si tratta di un uomo, ha anche fatto sapere il ministero, che è stato trattato con antivirali, sta bene, ed è attualmente in isolamento domiciliare con la sua compagna, anch'essa sottoposta a profilassi. Il nuovo caso, sempre secondo il ministero, non desta preoccupazione. In una nota del Ministero si spiega che ciò «non cambia lo scenario illustrato ieri dal Ministro Sacconi e dal sottosegretario Ferruccio Fazio nel corso della conferenza stampa che si è tenuta presso la sede del Ministero». L'aumento dei casi in Italia era infatti previsto ma «non desta particolare preoccupazione - conclude il ministero - sia perchè questo nuovo virus è responsabile di una sintomatologia più leggera di quella determinata dal virus dell'influenza stagionale, sia perchè l'Italia dispone di scorte sufficienti di farmaci indicati per il trattamento di questa infezione nonchè di Centri di riferimento di eccellenza per il ricovero e il trattamento delle persone affette. Si ricorda inoltre che sono già state assunte, tutte le misure preventive necessarie per limitare la diffusione del virus nel nostro paese».

Potenziato il call center. Sempre alto il traffico telefonico di cittadini che si sono rivolti al call center per avere informazioni. Il Ministero ha potenziato ulteriormente il servizio per far fronte in modo ottimale all'altissima richiesta di informazioni.

Il bilancio in Messico. Sale in Messico il bilancio dell'epidemia dell'influenza A/H1N1: 19 i morti e 454 i casi accertati. Nel mondo, dopo l'ultimo bollettino diffuso dall'Oms (17 morti e 634 casi accertati), i morti salgono a 20 mentre i casi accertati sono 691. Il ministro della Sanità messicano Josè Angel Cordova ha precisato che i casi riguardano 18 dei 32 Stati di cui è composto il Paese e che le morti si concentrano nella Valle de Mèxico, dove vivono 20 milioni di persone. La maggior parte (14) delle vittime sono donne. Il campionato di calcio continua nel Paese ma tutte le partite vengono giocate a porte chiuse.

Canada, suini infettati da allevatori. Alcuni suini in un allevamento della provincia canadese di Alberta sono stati trovati positivi al virus. A trasmettere il virus agli animali potrebbe essere stato il titolare dell'allevamento, che recentemente è stato in Messico. L'uomo, che secondo la Cbs è il titolare dell'allevamento, è guarito e anche i suini hanno superato la fase patologica o sono comunque in via di guarigione. L'Acia, l'associazione canadese che si occupa della vigilanza sul settore alimentare, ha detto che «il fatto che il virus sia stato trasmesso dall'uomo ad alcuni capi di bestiame non comporta rischi per la sicurezza alimentare della popolazione. «La carne di maiale canadese è sempre sicura», si sottolinea. Per motivi precauzionali, i capi colpiti dal virus sono stati posti in quarantena e il rischio che possano a loro volta trasmettere il morbo all'uomo, secondo l'Acia, «è minimo».

Nella Ue 49 casi. È salito a 49 il numero dei casi di febbre suina nei Paesi dell'Unione Europea. A fornire il bilancio è stato il Centro europeo per la prevenzione e il controllo delle malattie con sede a Stoccolma, che dà conto di dieci nuovi casi, di cui sette in Spagna, uno in Germania, uno in Irlanda e uno in Italia. Lo stesso centro quantifica in 780 i casi di contagio da virus H1N1 in tutto il mondo, 476 dei quali in Messico.

Il bilancio dell'Oms. Secondo l'Organizzazione mondiale della sanità i casi sono saliti a 787 (rispetto all'ultimo bollettino di ieri che ne contava 658) 20 quelli mortali, in 17 Paesi. L'Oms ha aggiornato i dati sul proprio sito web: il Messico ha registrato 506 casi accertati, inclusi 19 mortali, gli Usa 160 casi, incluso uno mortale. Contagi da nuova influenza si registrano in Austria (1), Canada (70), Hong Kong - Cina (1), Costa Rica (1), Danimarca (1), Francia (2), Germania (6), Israele (3), Olanda (1), Nuova Zelanda (4), Corea del Sud (1), Spagna (13), Svizzera (1) e Gran Bretagna (15) e Irlanda (1). L'Oms ribadisce che non vi è alcun rischio di infezione se si consumano prodotti, ben cucinati, derivati dai maiali.

Scontri in Egitto. Scontri a Il Cairo quartiere di Manshyaet Nasser tra polizia e allevatori di suini per impedire che vengano portati via i capi che devono essere abbattuti, secondo una decisione del governo di mercoledì scorso.

Il Papa prega per le vittime del Messico. Benedetto XVI ha voluto ricordare questa mattina, in occasione del Regina Coeli, le vittime dell'influenza suina che ha colpito il Messico e altri Paesi Rivolgendosi ai fedeli di lingua spagnola, Benedetto XVI ha affermato: «Desidero esprimere la mia vicinanza e assicurare la mia preghiera alle vittime dell'influenza che sta colpendo il Messico e altri Paesi». «Cari fratelli messicani - ha aggiunto il Pontefice - rimante saldi nella fede nel Signore, Lui vi aiuterà a superare questa difficoltà. Vi invito a pregare in famiglia in questi momenti di prova: Nostra Signora di Guadalupe vi assista e protegga sempre».

Colloquio tra Obama e Calderon. Il presidente americano Barack Obama ha avuto un colloquio telefonico con il collega messicano Felipe Calderon sulla situazione relativa alla nuova influenza. Obama e Calderon hanno sottolineato, nel corso della conversazione durata venti minuti, l'importanza di una stretta collaborazione tra i due paesi per fronteggiare la epidemia.

Negativi i casi in India. In India sono risultati tutti negativi i sei pazienti ricoverati a Delhi con i sintomi della nuova influenza. Lo riferiscono fonti del ministero della salute, citate dall'agenzia Ians. Dopo i tre già dimessi ieri dal Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital della capitale indiana, anche per gli ultimi tre pazienti è arrivato il via libera dalle autorità sanitarie alla dimissione dall'ospedale. Al momento, come hanno spiegato i vertici sanitaria dall'ospedale specializzato in malattie infettive, nessun paziente è ricoverato con i sintomi dell'H1N1.

ROMA (3 maggio) - Veronica Lario ha deciso. Chiederà il divorzio da Silvio Berlusconi. Il primo maggio la telefonata al suo avvocato. «Voglio tirare giù il sipario» ha detto la moglie del premier che aveva bacchettato il marito sulla candidatura delle "veline" alle europee. «Ciarpame senza pudore» l'aveva definita sottolineando «che io e i miei figli siamo vittime e non complici di questa situazione. Dobbiamo subirla e ci fa soffrire». La notizia della richiesta del divorzio è stata confernata all'Ansa.

«La strada del mio matrimonio è segnata - ha dichiarato la Lario su Repubblica - non posso stare con un uomo che frequenta le minorenni» riferendosi alla partecipazione del premier al compleanno in discoteca di una diciottenne, Noemi Letizia. «La signora - aveva risposto il premier sulla polemiche relative alle candidature alle Europee - ha creduto ai giornali della sinistra. Mi dispiace».

«Sono stata costretta a questo passo, non ho altro da aggiungere» ha detto la Lario. La moglie del premier avrebbe scelto una legale incontrata già ieri a Macherio. Si tratterebbe, sempre secondo le indiscrezione del quotidiano romano, di «una professionista lontana dallo star system e dalla politica» che la first lady avrebbe consultato al telefono il primo maggio, quando l'avvocatessa era in vacanza su un'isola del Sud.

«Vorrei evitare lo scontro». Veronica le avrebbe detto: «Voglio tirare giù il sipario, ma voglio fare una cosa da persona comune e perbene, senza clamore. Vorrei evitare lo scontro». E l'avvocatessa le avrebbe risposto: «Stia tranquilla. Parto subito, prendo un aliscafo e rientro immediatamente a Milano. Lei è consapevole che non sarà facile e che dovrà sopportare attacchi pesanti? È sicura di volerlo fare?». Dalla signora Lario, sempre secondo la ricostruzione fatta da La Repubblica, sarebbe arrivata una risposta senza esitazioni: «So tutto. Voglio andare avanti».

Ma la partecipazione alla festa della diciottenne è stata solo l'ultima di una lunga serie di crisi. Ci fu l'ultimatum del gennaio del 2007, scrive La Stampa: «Nulla è cambiato - spiega Veronica - da quando gli avevo rivolto un ultimatum e la misura ora è colma». L'ultimatum si riferisce alla partecipazione del Cavaliere alla cena dei Telegatti e ai commenti galanti del premier verso alcune donne.

Il matrimonio tra Veronica Lario e Silvio Berlusconi era stato celebrato nel dicembre 1990. La coppia ha tre figli, Barbara, Eleonora e Luigi.

Nessun commento da Berlusconi. Frenetici contatti con lo staff del presidente del consiglio per avere informazioni, ma le bocche sono rimaste sigillate. Niente è filtrato. Tutti i collaboratori contattati dai cronisti si sono limitati a dire che non sapevano nulla che non avevano indicazioni sul da farsi. Nel frattempo, di certo, Berlusconi è rimasto a consulto con i sottosegretari Gianni Letta e Paolo Bonaiuti, per decidere come fronteggiare la questione.

Lega: divorzio breve. «Se la moglie del premier, Veronica Lario, ha proprio deciso di divorziare da Silvio Berlusconi, e se decide di farlo come una persona comune, sappia che dovrà attendere molti anni e affrontare due giudizi, separazione e divorzio. Questa è la legge in Italia!». Così Diego Sabatinelli, segretario della Lega Italiana per il Divorzio Breve. «Chiediamo a Veronica di non confinare questo suo passo nel personale - dice Sabatinelli - ma che diventi anche battaglia civile e politica per riformare l'attuale pessima legge del divorzio in Italia. Da questo dramma familiare, che chiude una parentesi nella sua vita, può nascere un futuro d'impegno al fianco di tutti i cittadini italiani. Un sincero augurio».

Tronchetti Provera: questione personale. «Sono fatti privati e io non entro mai nel mondo delle questioni personali» commenta Marco Tronchetti Provera.

Casini: scelta sofferta. «Non faccio commenti. Posso solo dire che la scelta di Veronica di divorziare dal marito Silvio Berlusconi è sofferta e merita rispetto perché coinvolge non solo le persone ma anche i sentimenti e i figli» spiega il leader dell'Udc Pier Ferdinando Casini.

VERONICA ANNUNCIA IL DIVORZIO DAL PREMIER

L'offensiva di Silvio da Versavia e la sconfitta di tutte noi

«Berlusconi è n’ber probblema pe’ noi italiani. Pe’ come è fatto: te riconosci e nun te riconosci. Nun sai mai bene che pensà», spiegava ieri sera un avventore del baretto romano di piazza Farnese a un gruppo di origliatori rapiti. Anche la sua signora, grazie, è un po’ così. Alla sua seconda esternazione in due anni, quando ha parlato di «ciarpame» riferendosi a frequentazioni e candidature caldeggiate da suo marito (spesso coincidevano) e forse alle sue gite da una diciottenne napoletana che maliziosamente lo chiama “papi”, moltissime, d’istinto, si sono riconosciute. Poi ci hanno pensato un momento: per carità, ha ragione, ma perché non divorzia?

Ora divorzia, o almeno si separa, si sa che in Italia la procedura è complicata (per la cronaca: secondo la legge italiana la moglie separata ma non divorziata eredita la “legittima” proprio come una moglie, scusate la digressione). Divorzia e probabilmente non poteva fare altro, a questo punto. Questa volta non ci sono state lettere di scuse da marito simpaticamente malandrino, con le altre possibili fanciulle definite “bagatelle”. C’è stato un fuoco incrociato contro Veronica che ha spiazzato il pubblico, linciato il personaggio occasionalmente pubblico (Veronica, accusata anche di questo, di rimanere nell’ombra tranne quando attacca il marito), l’ha alla fine (finalmente?) costretta alle dimissioni da moglie.

Ha lanciato l’offensiva Silvio B. in persona addirittura, da Varsavia, chiamandola «quella signora» e definendola «vittima della stampa di sinistra». L’attacco era già in corso sul sito Pdl, nella blogosfera, onestamente anche nelle conversazioni da bar e da macchinetta del caffè. Manifestavano molti dubbi uomini e anche donne (piangere in limousine o nella villa di Macherio può non essere popolarissimo, in tempi di crisi).

Poi è arrivata la gogna a mezzo stampa, una prima pagina di Libero con vecchie foto di Veronica a teatro (nella pièce Il magnifico cornuto, ironia della storia), una sequenza in cui, sul palcoscenico, scopre il seno. Messaggio non troppo criptico: cosa vuole, ora, questa vecchia velina? Forse non lo sapremo mai, cosa voleva. Forse non vorremmo neanche saperlo. È un canovaccio che di sicuro continuerà per un po’, però; in cui esce in modo diciamo ambiguo il premier («ce se riconosce e nun ce se riconosce», per un maschio italiano, si è capito). In cui esce a pezzi una donna volutamente (ma anche no) misteriosa con una vita stranissima. Da cui escono un po’ peggio tutte le donne italiane. Non tanto per la figuraccia all’estero, non è più quella che conta (ne facciamo di continuo). Perché il gran pasticcio in cui è finita la nostra prima dama di fatto benché generalmente assente (quella ufficiale, Clio Napolitano, è mujer vertical rispettatissima dal marito, per fortuna; consoliamoci così) non aiuta l’autostima collettiva di tutte noi.

In questi giorni abbiamo sentito argomentazioni di due secoli fa, magari proposte da uomini civili e progressisti: «Ma cosa vuole, le donne dei grandi uomini devono sapere che il loro ruolo è al loro fianco e che non possono fare queste uscite, che un grande uomo ha molte donne e loro devono fare la loro parte con dignità». Solo loro? Parrebbe di sì. Sul resto, sul grand’uomo, sono stati finora consentiti e incoraggiati pettegolezzi e battutoni. Certo (sottotesto) donna Rachele Mussolini non l’avrebbe mai fatto. Ma proprio la dignitosa donna Rachele dobbiamo recuperare, nel 2009, come modello? E tutte le altre sono Clarette? È offensivo per tutte, suvvia. E allora si vorrebbe lasciar perdere. A prescindere da toni e intenzioni di V. Lario, questa è stata un’umiliazione collettiva.

Ed è pretestuoso dire «solo Veronica è in grado di fare opposizione, in questo Paese». Beato il Paese che non ha bisogno di Veroniche, che ha una maggioranza rispettabile e un’opposizione che fa il suo lavoro (anche il «tra moglie e marito…» del Pd Dario Franceschini non è stato un bel momento, diciamolo; di democristiani che dicono «i panni sporchi si lavano in casa» ne abbiamo avuto di più autorevoli, molto discussi ma con una visione più ampia e maggiore capacità di governare, è noto).

E il delirio gossiparo di questi giorni sta facendo male a tutti. A un partito e a un governo ridotti a comprimari di una pochade anche un po’ laida; a un’opposizione sgangherata che per curriculum non può nemmeno troppo polemizzare sulle belle fanciulle in lista (l’ha fatto anche il Pd); a un’Italia che avrebbe bisogno di parlare, di confrontarsi, di mobilitarsi sulle cose serie. Forse a una parte della classe politica il caso Lario fa comodo; si parla d’altro, non si parla di nient’altro, anzi. Ma a noi tutti, francamente, no. E non fa bene ai figli, alle figlie, nostre ma anche di Silvio Berlusconi (come si sentiranno Barbara, Eleonora, e pure Marina, bombardate di notizie su un padre così pimpante? Veronica lo ha detto, e su questo aveva stra-ragione; nessuno vuole che ragazze e ragazzine crescano tra mogli trascurate e forse disperate e adolescenti che dicono “papi” a sproposito; vorremmo tutti qualcosa di meglio, per loro e per noi).
