Coisa linda nesse mundo
É sair por um segundo
E te encontrar por aí
E ficar sem compromisso
Pra fazer festa ou comício
Com você perto de mim

Na cidade em que me perco
Na praça em que me resolvo
Na noite da noite escura
É lindo ter junto ao corpo
Ternura de um corpo manso
Na noite da noite escura

A coisa mais linda que existe
É ter você perto de mim
A coisa mais linda que existe
É ter você perto de mim

O apartamento, o jornal
O pensamento, a navalha
A sorte que o vento espalha
Essa alegria, o perigo
Eu quero tudo contigo

Serra lidera as pesquisas.

tu vives sempre implicando
com meu modo de viver.
Sou prosa, sei que sou prosa,
pois nada devo a ninguém
e por isso tu me acusas
de convencida e orgulhosa.

Se acaso escondo o meu jogo
de alguma amiga ou parenta
que quer dinheiro emprestado
tu vens logo xeretando
e chamar-me de avarenta

Se desejo ter o trato
que tem a nossa vizinha
mais feia que um chimpanzé
mas, granfa e sempre cheirosa,
e fico olhando a perua
do buraco da janela,
o meu humor envenenas

tu bancas o imaculado
de mãos postas: queridinha,
a ira é grande pecado!

De manhã, se acho bacana
ficar na cama um pouquinho
enquanto tomas café,
vens com a cara pendurada,
igual a um velho gagá,
entre os dentes resmungando:
preguiçosa, preguiçosa...

Quando vou ao restaurante,
só porque olho o cardápio
e prefiro um vatapá
com castanha e amendoim,
uma pizza, uma fritada,
um macarrão com almôndegas,
um arroz, uma salada
com creme de leite e vinho,
um pudim de chocolate
e por cima um cafezinho,
me olhas com olhar tão terno,
mas lá bem dentro de ti
tua voz grita: gulosa
vai comer assim no inferno.

Tu me chamas fogueteira,
sapeca, luxurienta,
sem motivo, à-toa, à-toa,
porque já de longa data
tu pifaste, meu querido,
e eu prossigo, e muito boa.

És anjinho e eu carrego
os pecados de satã,
mas não te darei pelota.
Para mim só é pecado
ser bucho, ser idiota,
é querer comprar um teco
e não ver na bolsa a nota,
é guardar grande desejo
de chapoletar alguém
e em vez disso dar-lhe um beijo,
é ter um bom apetite
e só comer vegetais,
é vontade de mandar
todo dia uma brasinha
e ficar de olhinhos baixos
com ares de pomba-rola
num altar de uma santinha.

E, que o bom Deus me perdoe
se estou dizendo heresia,
pecado é ficar zanzando
pela vida dando murros,
é dormir noites inteiras
sem os prelúdios do amor,
é trabalhar no pesado
suando tal qual os burros.

Se tua achas que ao meu lado
estás, por teres pecado
numa outra encarnação,
cumprindo uma triste sina,
te manca, meu bobalhão,
dá meu desquite e vai ver
tua avó lá noutra esquina.

Why don't women drink beer? - The Times, uk - link (aqui)

May 16, 2009

Beer is generally thought to be a man’s drink. Emma Mahony agreed, until she tried the new ales that brewers are creating specifically for women

Janet Street-Porter is prising off her purple high heels, seated at a table groaning with new “female-friendly” beers. “I hate everything about beer culture,” she carps.

“I hate the smell of beer, I hate men’s beer guts, I hate all the crap that goes with beer.” She pauses only to put on her trainers and summon new vitriol. “You know, one in four pubs is closing and they deserve to close because they are bloody crap!”

Right ho, Janet. The balanced discussion on why British women tend not to drink beer has got off to a lairy start. I can’t help thinking that if this were a group of Frenchwomen discussing wine, the conversation might be a little more elevated. But it certainly confirms that Project Eve, a new campaign to encourage more women to give beer a try, has some way to go: Street-Porter is not alone in her antipathy to the hop.

Only 13 per cent of British women choose beer over other drinks, compared with 40 per cent on the Continent.

This is the attitude that Kristy McCready, MD of BitterSweet Partnership, wants to change with the multimillion-pound campaign. It is not about encouraging a return to the ladette culture of the 1990s, but an attempt to help beer to shake off its overwhelmingly male image.

“We are encouraging women to have a choice,” she says. “We want to listen to women about what they want, get behind what they want and then speak to the licensed trade. We hope to change the landscape of beer.”

So what are they up against? Well, for a start there’s the big one: nearly 50 per cent of women polled for the initiative complained that drinking beer would make them put on weight. Add to this the more than 40 per cent who say the advertising is unappealing, and the third who see drinking beer as “manly” and you’ve got substantial opposition before anyone has even got on to taste.

The BitterSweet Partnership counters the weight claim with a number of studies, including “The relation between drinking pattern and body mass index and waist and hip circumference” (Tolstrup et al, 2005), which suggests that if you are drinking beer moderately every day you are less likely to suffer from obesity and will be slimmer than “someone whose consumption pattern is to only binge occasionally”.

The study shows that the risk of obesity is almost 30 per cent lower for those consuming over seven days per week as opposed to two to four days.

As to the manly accusation, the chef and restaurateur Allegra McEvedy, co-founder of the healthy fast-food chain Leon, prefers the word “ballsy” and is keen that women should overcome their prejudices to sample the great tastes of different beers.

McEvedy, a keen drinker of Guinness, feels very comfortable holding a pint. “The stereotypes around beer annoy me and get my back up. It is a fantastically crafted drink, but the most important aspect of it is taste and environment. I like to drink Sagres lager, London Pride, Guinness in winter, or Doom Bar beer in Rock in Cornwall. All of these have wonderful flavours — just like a glass of wine.”

McEvedy is also a keen advocate of using beer in cooking. “For example, just try putting a bottle of London Pride into a casserole, or a porter beer chucked into boeuf bourguignon at the beginning,” she says. Her interest today is in some of the “female-friendly” beers being tasted by the panel, beers that the industry will be rolling out in tasting sessions across the country over the summer.

I am sorry to say that I found the beers unpalatable. I hope that the clear beer, developed by Coors as a first for the UK market and as yet un-named, never sees the light of day for the sake of all those street cleaners in town centres on Sunday mornings. Flavoured with “dragon fruit and green tea”, it looked like lemonade and tasted like a sickly alcopop.

Equally gassy and difficult to drink was the “beer cocktail with crème de peche and cranberry juice”, and the Kasteel Cru Rose was a disappointing alternative to any middle-of-the-road rosé wine. Just as I was ready to leave unconvinced, hope sprang in the form of Harry’s Beer, made by Harriet Easton, 20, a student at Newcastle University, who has created a new beer with a citrus twist specifically for women.

“When I was going out at 16 or 17 I used to drink alcopops, but they made me feel sick because of the sugar. So I switched to lagers.” One day, hanging around in a bar waiting to be served, she noticed that none of the beer line-up was aimed at women. So she decided to do something about it and gathering a team of six. “I found a designer, financial person, sales, etc, by selling equity for shares,” she says.

As you may expect, there was no shortage of market testers at university, and in August last year the first bottles made it into local Midland supermarkets. “That month, we outsold Newcastle Brown Ale, so we knew we were on to something,” Easton says. “I thought it would take on the 18 to 24-year-old market, so my biggest surprise is that it has been a hit with the older generation, too.”

Easton was most concerned that the beer would be as free as possible from chemicals. “The low ABV [4 per cent] of my beer is a good alternative to high-ABV, chemical-ridden drinks.” What she wasn’t expecting was to register the drink as healthy. “When I registered my copyright and trademarks, I was fascinated to discover that beer was not in the ‘alcoholic drinks’ section, but in the ‘health drinks and cordial’ part. The principle is that good, pure ale is a great social drink that in moderate measures can be beneficial to health and help to relieve stress levels.” With sales for March outnumbering sales for the whole of the previous year, and talks with supermarket chain Morrisons going ahead, Easton feels confident that her student days will not end in unemployment.

Indeed, the only possible fly in the ointment may come from an unexpected source. Delegates at the National Union of Students annual conference in Blackpool last month voted to set a minimum price on alcohol in student unions, one of the last bastions of cheap beer.

Is Easton worried? “No. At £1.19 a bottle, my beer is classy, sophisticated and stylish,” she says.

Let’s hope that the beer can find enough equally classy and sophisticated women to agree.

Two in five shun three main political parties - the Independent, uk - link (aqui)

jason alden - The figures relate to the whole electorate, and 'none of the above' includes 23 per cent who say they are unlikely to vote - an unprecedentedly high figure for a poll - and 17 per cent who are supporters of minor parties. On one analysis, 'none of the above' hits 64 per cent, and those who won't vote stands at 54 per cent

After 10 days of headlines that have devastated Parliament, The IoS reveals the strength of the public revolt against mainstream politics

By Jane Merrick and Brian Brady

Sunday, 17 May 2009

Disenchantment among the British electorate with the three main parties is at a record high after 10 days of revelations about the expenses claims of the nation's MPs.

Two in five say they will refuse to vote or select one of the minor parties, such as the Greens or Ukip, rather than support the Tories, Labour or the Liberal Democrats, a ComRes poll shows.

The figures presented on the front page today are percentages for the entire electorate, and so include the 23 per cent who say they will not vote in the Westminster elections. They also include 17 per cent who will consider voting for a minor party – and that could prove a big opportunity for the Greens and Ukip at the forthcoming European polls, where they would be expected to do much better than in the first-past-the-post system.

The 40 per cent for "none of the above" is compared with 31 per cent for the Tories, 16 per cent for Labour and 13 per cent for the Lib Dems.

Among those absolutely certain to vote, the figures are even more stark – 64 per cent back "none of the above". Of these, 54 per cent are unlikely to vote and 10 per cent back other parties. This would leave the Conservatives on 18 per cent, Labour on 10 per cent and the Lib Dems on 8 per cent, suggesting there may be a record low turnout at the next election.

On the traditional state of the parties measure, Labour slides five points on last month to another record low – 21 per cent – with the Tories also slipping five, though well out in front on 41 per cent. The Lib Dems remain at 18 per cent. In an election, this would give David Cameron a majority of 152.

The slump of Labour and the Tories since the ComRes poll for The Independent last month underscores how the main parties are being punished for the expenses scandal. And a supplementary question asked of voters suggests that 43 per cent will consider voting for a minor party in the European elections next month. Other polls suggest that the Greens are set to double their 6 per cent of last time round.

Andrew Hawkins, chief executive of ComRes, said: "I can't remember any time when the minor parties were at anything like this level."

In an attempt to regain the initiative and restore trust, Gordon Brown will today issue a veiled threat to ministers whose expenses are under investigation that they could be sacked. The Prime Minister warns that any minister who is found to have "morally" or technically broken the rules "will not serve" with his government. He adds that Labour MPs found to be cheating will be deselected.

The Metropolitan Police has announced that it will this week consider launching criminal investigations into MPs' expenses claims. Downing Street sources refused to comment on the "scoping" inquiries into several MPs, including Chancellor Alistair Darling, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon and the employment minister Tony McNulty.

The Speaker, Michael Martin, will also come under intense pressure to carry the can for the scandal, with friends suggesting he might announce his intention to stand down before the next election to try to appease critics. A motion of no confidence is expected to be tabled by MPs as early as tomorrow. His former media adviser, John Stonborough, told The Sunday Times last night that Mr Martin ruled with a "reign of terror" that allegedly held up a solution to the expenses crisis.

Yesterday Martin Bell, the anti-sleaze campaigner, suggested he might stand for election against an MP hit by the scandal, possibly the Speaker. There were reports last night that even the Queen has made clear to Mr Brown her unhappiness at the crisis. And an investigation by the IoS has discovered that Britain's MPs are taking advantage of another allowances "loophole" that lets them channel taxpayers' money into the network of local constituency associations around the country. More than 100 MPs are using expenses to pay their often impoverished constituency parties thousands of pounds a year for facilities and services such as rent and secretarial help. The MPs, who include Mr Cameron and nine members of his Shadow Cabinet, say they are paying for legitimate business services and that the arrangements have the blessing of House of Commons authorities.

In the ComRes poll, 50 per cent disagree with the statement that "most MPs are honest and have been let down by the greed of a minority", while 46 per cent agree. Six out of 10 voters believe Mr Cameron has dealt with the expenses issue better than Mr Brown.

Yet there is bad news for Labour MPs hoping for a fresh start under a candidate such as Alan Johnson, with just 32 per cent of people agreeing that the Health Secretary would be a better Prime Minister than Mr Brown.

The Sunday Telegraph today printed more revelations, including the expenses of the Tory MP Julian Lewis, who claimed more than £7,000 for redecorating his second home and installing new kitchen appliances. The MP for New Forest East denied any wrongdoing and said he would be "astonished" if an internal party audit ordered by Mr Cameron would judge any of his claims unreasonable and demand he return the cash.

Labour MP David Chaytor became the second in his party to be suspended, following Elliot Morley's downfall last week, after he admitted claiming £13,000 in mortgage interest payments for a mortgage that had been repaid. Mr Chaytor said he had made an "unforgivable error" and apologised unreservedly.

A ComRes poll of European voting intentions for the Sunday Express, commissioned by Ukip, put the Tories on 28 per cent, Labour on 20 and the Lib Dems on 14. Ukip were on 15, the Greens on 11 and the BNP on 4 per cent. And a BPIX/Mail on Sunday survey of general election voting intentions put the Tories on 42 per cent and Labour down at 20 per cent.

Sex, drink and fashion. Is this the new face of American feminism? - The Guardian, uk - link (aqui)

An online war has broken out in the women's movement sparked by the Jezebels, young bloggers who flaunt their hard drinking and unashamed promiscuity and who are infuriating traditional feminists. Amelia Hill and Eva Wiseman report

It seemed like a coup for feminism when Slate, an online magazine, launched a new, women-focused website, Double X, last month. Declaring its dedication to "tackling subjects high and low" in voices that were "unabashedly intellectual without being dry or condescending", Double X burst on to the blogosphere, seemingly ready to tackle the knotty question of what it means - and takes - to be a fully liberated woman today.

Except that, instead of squaring up to the sexual politics of the outside world, the site chose to fight its first battle with one of its own, accusing Jezebel - one of America's biggest and liveliest websites for women - of damaging women, degrading its own writers and betraying the quest for true sexual equality.

Jezebel is a tabloid-style website dedicated to "Celebrity, sex, fashion for women - without airbrushing". Based in the US, it has almost 900,000 readers across the world. Its writers lead divided lives: landing some hard-hitting feminist punches - such as raising funds for the victims of "honour" killings in Basra - while at the same time writing salaciously and candidly about their choice to live lives of unashamed promiscuity.

It was in response to one of these articles that Double X lit the fuse that has set the online global community alight. Under the heading "The trouble with Jezebel: how Jezebel is hurting women", it accused its rival of mistaking self-indulgence for acting in pursuit of a political goal.

Double X columnist Linda Hirshman, also a contributor to the New York Times and the Washington Post, referred to an hour-long television appearance by Tracie Egan, a Jezebel blogger who goes by the moniker "Slut Machine", and Maureen "Moe" Tkacik, in which the two young women refused to engage with a serious discussion about sexual politics and culture. Shrugging off a question about rape and sexual responsibility, Tkacik casually explained why she didn't report her own date rape to the police. "I had better things to do," she said. "Like drinking more."

After the programme, presenter Lizz Winstead explained how shocked she had been by the behaviour of the young women. Writing on her Huffington Post blog, Winstead said: "They do not understand the influence they have over the women who read them, nor do they accept any responsibility as role models for young women who are coming of age searching for lifestyles to emulate."

In last week's article for Double X, Hirshman singled out Egan and Tkacik as "a symptom of the weaknesses in the model of perfect egalitarian sexual freedom". The Jezebel website, she argued, is guilty of promoting the belief that modern-day feminism is simply "doing what feels good to you". In doing so, it uses the language of old-style feminism to betray the movement's ideals.

Hirshman, author of Get to Work: A Manifesto for Women of the World, added: "It's the supposed concern with feminism that makes the site so problematic. The Jezebels are ... a living demonstration of the chaotic possibilities the movement always contained." The writer said that she found the attitudes particularly surprising because they "look a lot like the natural heirs of feminism: young, college-educated, urban (mostly New York), single, hard-working, sexually liberated".

Her accusations have reverberated around the global online community. The Jezebel website has responded with "Who are you calling a bad feminist?", in which Hirshman is decried as creating a "victim-shaming diatribe" and for promoting a feminist philosophy that is deeply sexist. "I have seen misogyny and, most of the time, it looks a lot like the ideology Hirshman has the audacity to call 'feminism'," the article stated.

The argument has become so furious that others have stepped in, with all guns blazing. Speaking to the Observer, Naomi Wolf, author of Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries, agrees with Hirshman. "Third-wave feminism is pluralistic, strives to be multi-ethnic, is pro-sex and tolerant of other women's choices," she said. "It has led to an embrace of what was once so politically suspect - the notion that you can be a 'lipstick lesbian' or a 'riot grrrl' [referring to a feminist punk movement that emerged in the 90s] if you want to be, that you can choose your persona and your freedom for yourself.

"But that very individualism, which has been great for feminism's rebranding, is also its weakness: it can be fun and frisky, but too often it's ahistorical and apolitical. As many older feminists justly point out, the world isn't going to change because a lot of young women feel confident and personally empowered, if they don't have grassroots groups or lobbies to advance woman-friendly policies, help break through the glass ceiling, develop decent work-family support structures or solidify real political clout.

"But feminists are in danger if we don't know our history, and a saucy tattoo and a condom do not a revolution make," she added. "The fact is, we know the answers to western women's problems: the way is mapped out, the time for theory is pretty much over. We know the laws and the policies we need to achieve full equality. What we lack is a grassroots movement that will drive the political will. 'Lipstick' or lifestyle feminism won't produce that movement alone."

Julie Bindel, a feminist campaigner and journalist, admitted being infuriated by women like Egan and Tkacik. "Feminism is not the freedom to act like a dickhead," she said. "These women are individualists, not feminists. They are lazy, bone-idle women who have no interest taking part in a political movement for change but are trying to get credibility for their selfish lives by playing identification politics. You can't claim to be a feminist simply because you're a woman."

Sandrine Levêque, campaigns manager at Object, the human rights organisation which challenges the sexual objectification of women in popular culture, agreed. "It's almost like what was seen as sexist 20 years ago has been repackaged as empowerment and liberation for women in the 21st century," she said. "It is difficult to make choices in today's pornified culture which bombards us with the message that raunch culture is where it's at for women in 2009."

Younger feminists, however, are more inclined to be critical of Hirshman. "When it comes to Double X, I think we're just left with questions - is it feminist, or is it not feminist? Why did it host a story blaming another woman for not reporting being raped? What is promiscuity? What does that mean? To me, it speaks of trying to slut-shame women who are having consensual sex as and when they want it," said Jess McCabe, editor of the F Word, a British website that describes itself as feminist.

"There is no such thing as a bad feminist. Feminism is a social justice movement, it is not about chiding other women, or establishing yet another set of standards for women to be judged against. We all mess up - we've all been raised in a sexist, racist, transphobic, heteronormative society, and guess what, that affects our behaviour. We all also differ in terms of what feminism means to us."

Ellie Levenson, author of the forthcoming book The Noughtie Girl's Guide to Feminism, is also critical of Hirshman's definition of "good" and "bad" feminism. "A lot of the criticism against Jezebel is against women being open about their sexual antics," she said. "Feminism is about women choosing how to behave and having the same rights and freedoms to behave badly as men do, so in order to make these choices we need to be able to read about women who have made all kinds of choices."

The main problem with feminism today, added Levenson, is that it has become a word that people don't want to be associated with. "But when you start asking them whether they believe in equal rights for men and women they say, yes, absolutely. So it is the word and not the concept that is the problem."

McCabe agreed. Feminism today may be characterised by infighting and factionalism, she said, but the movement is very definitely alive and fiercely kicking. "Just look at the number of feminist groups launching up and down the UK, from the Million Women Rise march in London, from the resurgency of reclaim-the-night marches, from the growth of feminist blogs," she said.

"The tide is slowly growing, and it is badly needed," she added. "Things like the rape conviction rate being so pathetic it is almost non-existent, women's services facing closure and the pay gap actually increasing - there is more of a need for feminist activism than ever."

A movement rich in diversity

• Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan and Susan Brownmiller defined the revolutionary feminism of the 60s and 70s. They protested at Miss World contests and rejected the stay-at-home role and other aspects of traditional femininity.

• They clashed with the radical feminists, including Andrea Dworkin, Catharine MacKinnon, Mary Daly and Germaine Greer, who believed that women were oppressed by men.

• Then came the "riot grrl" phenomenon of the early 90s and Generation X, who were more likely to talk (very) dirty and less likely to oppose pornography.

• The newest strain is the new/power feminist, epitomised by Naomi Wolf and Natasha Walter, who dislike the image of the strident feminist.

• Then there's pop-feminism/feminism "lite". This is Spice Girls feminism: girl power. Feminism as a fleeting fashion trend. Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a feminist icon.

• Martin 'a defender of the way things are', says Lib Dem leader
• Downing Street appears to abandon support for Speaker

The Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, today called for the resignation of Michael Martin as Commons Speaker, accusing him of being "a dogged defender of the way things are".

Clegg abandoned Westminster convention that party leaders avoid criticism of the Speaker by saying Martin had been "dragging his feet on transparency".

"I do not think the Speaker should be made a scapegoat ... for the individual failings of many MPs, he said. "But equally I do not think we can afford the luxury of a Speaker, who is supposed to embody Westminster, who has been dragging his feet on transparency and greater accountability in the way MPs receive their expenses."

Martin appeared close to losing his fight to stay in office as Downing Street last night abandoned its support on the eve of a no-confidence motion on his leadership.

If he is ousted, it would be the first time a Speaker has been forced out by a formal challenge since Sir John Trevor was sacked for taking bribes in 1695 during the reign of William of Orange.

Senior MPs of all parties believe Martin will have no option but to announce within the next few days that he is to quit before the next parliament, as MPs move to repair the damage inflicted by the expenses crisis. He stands accused of failing to grasp the scale of public anger and rounding on members who question his handling of the affair.

Brown has staunchly defended Martin in the past but there are signs that this support is ebbing away. "Things are looking difficult for him," said a senior source close to the prime minister said last night. "I don't detect any particular groundswell of support."

Another Brownite minister said the PM would not intervene, but added: "He [Martin] is a joke, and he should go."

Speaking on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, Clegg said: "Convention is that political leaders, party leaders, do not talk about the Speaker.

"My view is that it is exactly that culture of unwritten conventions, unspoken rules and nods and winks that has got us into that trouble in the first place.

"I have arrived at the conclusion that the Speaker must go.

"He has proved himself over some time now to be a dogged defender of the way things are, the status quo, when what we need, very urgently, is someone at the heart of Westminster who will lead a wholesale radical process of reform."

He spoke out as Labour former minister Kate Hoey became the latest MP to publicly state that she would sign the no-confidence motion, which is being tabled by Tory Douglas Carswell tomorrow.

Hoey was among MPs on the receiving end of a series of Commons rebukes from Martin last week which intensified calls for him to step down.

"MPs should sign, because let's all be frank and honest, Michael Martin is not up to the role," she said.

Carswell's motion, signed by about a dozen MPs but backed by many more, says Martin has "failed to provide leadership relating to hon members' expenses" and demands that a replacement be found to ensure parliament can be "an effective legislature once again".

The Speaker will have to decide whether to risk MPs' wrath by dismissing the motion – or ask the government to find time to debate it. Either way, he will be in such an awkward position that even close friends in the Commons and Lords believe that he may prefer to fall on his sword.

Yesterday, Martin's former media spokesman, John Stonborough, raised the pressure by accusing him of vetoing reform of the expenses system and exploding with rage when challenged about his own second-home allowance claims. Stonborough suggested his former boss should now seek a dignified exit, adding: "We should not have to watch the humiliation of him being voted out of office."

Stonborough, who worked for Martin during a period where the Speaker's own expense claims were headline news, said he had lost his temper at the suggestion that claiming allowances on his Glasgow house did not "look good" while he had a grace-and-favour home in Westminster. The Speaker reacted "extremely violently", Stonborough said, and his officials were scared to challenge his decisions.

Carswell last night called for an urgent contest in parliament, by secret ballot, to install a new Speaker. "I would like there to be a proper open competition so that the public can see that we are selecting the best person to clean up the pigsty," he added.

Those tipped as potential successors include the former Labour minister Frank Field, the former Tory ministers Sir George Young and David Davis, and the Conservative MP John Bercow.

Jo Swinson, the Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire, whose constituency includes Martin's home near Glasgow, called for him to go. "The Speaker should have been at the forefront of finding a solution, but has sadly become part of the problem," she said.

Lynne Featherstone, the Liberal Democrat frontbencher, joined calls for him to quit and said she had even urged Clegg to call for the dissolution of parliament.

David Winnick, one of the Labour MPs who clashed with him last week, said he did not want Martin to be humiliated in a vote. "I know that he is a sensible person. He will be reflecting on his position and I am sure he will come to the obvious conclusion."

CHRISTOPHE FORT (1)- Je suis artiste peintre.

FULVIA CAPRARA
INVIATA A CANNES
